SEO and GEO: what's the difference for a Tunisian business?

More and more people ask questions directly to assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude instead of typing a query into Google. This has given rise to a new term: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), alongside traditional SEO.

Understanding the problem: two different logics

SEO optimises a site to appear in a list of results the user then browses and clicks. GEO aims for information about your business to be correctly understood, cited or referenced by a generative AI system that synthesises an answer directly, without necessarily sending a click to your site.

Crawlability and robot access

A properly configured robots.txt that does not exclude the main AI systems' bots is a baseline condition.

Clarity of entities and structured data

Structured data (JSON-LD in schema.org format) helps automated systems — search engines and generative AI alike — understand precisely who you are, what you do, and where.

Content quality and clarity

Content that directly answers a question, with clear structure, is more easily summarised by an AI than purely promotional text with no concrete answer.

What GEO cannot guarantee

There is no method that guarantees an AI assistant will recommend your business in a given answer. Generative AI systems work differently from a classic search engine, and their selection logic isn't publicly detailed. Any promise of guaranteed results here should be treated with caution.

Practical method

  • Check that robots.txt allows access to major search and AI assistant bots
  • Keep sitemap.xml up to date, with no broken URLs
  • Structure content with correct JSON-LD data
  • Answer frequent questions in your sector clearly, in real HTML content
  • Keep business information consistent across the web

Mistakes to avoid

  • Promising a client guaranteed appearance in AI answers
  • Accidentally blocking AI assistant bots in robots.txt

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, it complements it. Technically and editorially well-structured content serves both classic search engines and generative AI systems.

Can a ranking in ChatGPT be guaranteed?

No, and any agency that formally promises this should raise suspicion — it isn't technically guaranteeable today.

Conclusion

GEO is not a magic technique but a logical extension of already-known SEO and technical best practices: accessibility, clarity, structure and information consistency.
